Artist's Comments
Orators' Dialogue is one of Tacitus's early work; he reports to his close friend, Iustos Fabios, a conversation between four men (Marcos Apros, Iulios Secundus, Viptsanos Messalla and Curiatius Maternus) about the decay of rhetoric.
Everyone of them has a different opinion and a different way to explain it: Marcos Apros thinks that nowadays oratory is better than before, Messalla thinks that nowadays the rhetoric has decayed because of the bad school and education of youth; Iulios Secundus is "neutral", we can say. Tacitus clearly prefers Maternos's opinion: oratory was greater in past for him, because during difficult times, of war and disorder, the way of talking could really change the situation and people's opinion too. My intention was to portray everyone of them while discussing about this matter. |
